The USS Indianapolis, commanded by Captain Charles Butler McVay III, carried 1,195 personnel on its mission to deliver components of the atomic bomb “Little Boy” to Tinian on July 16, 1945. Minutes after midnight on July 30, 1945, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank rapidly. Only 316 survived after four harrowing days in the water, enduring exposure, dehydration, burns, and shark attacks.
Obverse (Heads): Depicts the USS Indianapolis with 10 battle stars, framed by a riveted border. Inscriptions read “USS INDIANAPOLIS CA-35” and “1932–1945.”
Reverse (Tails): Shows survivors clinging to a raft as they spot a rescue plane or spotlight from the USS Cecil J. Doyle, offering hope. Inscriptions include “1195 SAILED,” “316 SURVIVED,” and “ACT OF CONGRESS 2018.”
