Montford Point Marines Bronze Medal – 3 Inch
This striking 3-inch bronze medal is a faithful reproduction of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Montford Point Marines, the first African Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. It honors their bravery, perseverance, and critical role in reshaping the military during a time of global conflict and domestic segregation.
Honoring Pioneers of Service and Change
Awarded collectively on June 27, 2012, during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, this medal recognizes the service and sacrifice of more than 19,000 Black Marines who trained at Camp Montford Point in North Carolina between 1942 and 1949, following President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 executive order creating the Fair Employment Practices Commission.
Montford Point Marines participated in major World War II battles, including Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Peleliu, and Saipan. Their exemplary performance under pressure laid the groundwork for the eventual integration of the Marine Corps in 1949.
Obverse (Front):
Designed and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, this side features three Marines in varied uniforms representing the roles they served—mechanic, infantryman, and officer. Below, an active training scene captures the intensity of their preparation. The inscriptions read:
“Montford Point Marines,” “1942,” and “1949.”
Reverse (Back):
Created by Don Everhart, the reverse portrays Marines in formation during training, with the iconic Camp Montford Point water tower rising in the background—a powerful symbol recognized by every Marine who trained there. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions:
“For Outstanding Perseverance and Courage that Inspired Social Change in the Marine Corps,”
“2011,” and “Act of Congress.”
Whether for your own collection or as a meaningful gift, this 3-inch bronze medal honors the legacy of those who overcame adversity to serve with distinction—paving the way for equality in America’s armed forces.
