Montford Point Marines Bronze Medal – 1.5 Inch

This 1.5-inch bronze medal is a scaled replica of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Montford Point Marines, honoring the courage, sacrifice, and groundbreaking service of the first African Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps.

A Tribute to Trailblazers in Uniform
Presented collectively in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on June 27, 2012, this medal recognizes the contributions of over 19,000 Black Americans who served in the Marine Corps during World War II—many under segregated conditions. These Marines trained at Camp Montford Point in North Carolina between 1942 and 1949, following President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 executive order promoting fair employment practices in the military.

Montford Point Marines served with distinction in some of the most intense battles of the Pacific Theater, including Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Peleliu, and Saipan. Nearly 13,000 served overseas, often in demanding combat support and front-line roles.

Obverse (Front):
Designed and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, this side features three Montford Point Marines in different uniforms, symbolizing their evolving roles. A scene of field training appears in the lower background. The inscriptions along the rim include:
“Montford Point Marines,” “1942,” and “1949” — marking the years of service prior to full integration of the Marine Corps.

Reverse (Back):
Created by Don Everhart, the reverse shows Marines standing in formation with the iconic Montford Point water tower in the distance—a symbol familiar to all who trained there. Around the scene are the inscriptions:
“For Outstanding Perseverance and Courage that Inspired Social Change in the Marine Corps,”
“2011,” and “Act of Congress.”

Whether you're a military history enthusiast or a collector of civil rights memorabilia, this medal offers a meaningful way to remember the bravery and determination of those who helped reshape the U.S. Marine Corps—and the nation.
