1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights Marches – 1.5" Bronze Medal

This 1.5-inch bronze medal, minted at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, is a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded in recognition of the historic Selma to Montgomery protest marches of March 1965—a pivotal chapter in the American civil rights movement that directly led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Marches:
Known as “Bloody Sunday,” “Turnaround Tuesday,” and the final Selma to Montgomery March, these peaceful demonstrations united Americans across racial and economic lines to demand voting rights for African Americans.

On March 7, 1965, civil rights leaders John Lewis and Rev. Hosea Williams led the first marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where they were met with violent resistance.

A second attempt, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was halted out of concern for protesters’ safety.

The third and final march, held from March 21–25, 1965, succeeded under federal protection. Marchers walked 54 miles to Montgomery, symbolizing the century-long struggle for African American voting rights.

Obverse Design:
Depicts marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, with inscriptions:

“SELMA TO MONTGOMERY MARCHES 1965”

“FOOT SOLDIERS FOR JUSTICE”

Reverse Design:
Features a hand casting a ballot, with the quote:

“EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN MUST HAVE AN EQUAL RIGHT TO VOTE” — from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1965 address to Congress.
Additional inscriptions include:

“VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965”

“ACT OF CONGRESS 2015”

This medal honors the courage and sacrifice of the “foot soldiers” who helped change the course of American history.
