1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights Marches – 1.5" Bronze Medal
This 1.5-inch bronze medal, struck by the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, is a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded in honor of the courageous protestors who participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches of March 1965. These historic demonstrations played a pivotal role in the eventual passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Obverse (Front):
The front of the medal features a powerful image of civil rights marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge—a symbolic moment during their 54-mile journey to the Alabama state capitol.
Engraved inscriptions include:
“SELMA TO MONTGOMERY MARCHES 1965”
“FOOT SOLDIERS FOR JUSTICE”
Reverse (Back):
The reverse design honors the legislative triumph that followed—the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It displays a hand casting a ballot into a box, accompanied by a quote from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s landmark address to Congress:
“EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN MUST HAVE AN EQUAL RIGHT TO VOTE”
Additional inscriptions:
“VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965”
“ACT OF CONGRESS 2015”
Background:
These marches, now memorialized as “Bloody Sunday,” “Turnaround Tuesday,” and the final Selma to Montgomery March, united people across racial and socioeconomic lines in peaceful protest against voter suppression. The first march on March 7, 1965, led by John Lewis and Rev. Hosea Williams, ended in brutal violence. A second attempt, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was turned back to ensure the safety of the marchers. The third and final march, held from March 21 to 25, was carried out under federal protection—marking a victorious moment in the struggle for civil rights and highlighting the enduring strength of the movement’s “foot soldiers.”
This medal stands as a tribute to their bravery, resilience, and the progress they helped achieve.
