Brown v. Board of Education Bronze Medal – 1.5-Inch Commemorative
This 1.5-inch bronze medal pays tribute to the courageous individuals who played a pivotal role in challenging school segregation in America. It honors Reverend Joseph A. DeLaine, Harry and Eliza Briggs, and Levi Pearson, whose efforts were instrumental in the legal battle that helped lead to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.
This medal is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal presented in their honor for their commitment to justice and equal education opportunities for all.
Obverse (Front) Design:
Features detailed portraits of Reverend DeLaine, Harry and Eliza Briggs, and Levi Pearson. Above the portraits are the inscriptions “BRIGGS V. ELLIOTT” and “Our Trust Is In God.” The state tree of South Carolina, the cabbage palmetto, appears on both sides of the design, framing the names. Below the portraits is the inscription “BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION.”
Reverse (Back) Design:
Depicts Justice in classical form, symbolizing fairness and equality under the law. To her right, the medal reads:
“Honoring the pioneers and petitioners from Clarendon County, South Carolina.”
Also featured is a powerful excerpt adapted from Judge J. Waties Waring’s dissent:
“They proved that segregation in education can never produce equality and that it is evil that must be eradicated.”
The design is completed with “ACT OF CONGRESS 2003.”
This meaningful medal serves as a lasting reminder of the brave actions taken to confront injustice and advance civil rights in the United States.
