16th Street Baptist Church Bombing Victims – 1.5” Bronze Medal
This 1.5-inch bronze medal honors the memory of Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley—four young girls whose lives were tragically taken in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. It is a smaller replica of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to them posthumously, as authorized by Congress in 2013.
Obverse (Front):
The design features the silhouettes of the four girls, symbolizing innocence lost. Encircling the image are their names, while the words
“PIVOTAL IN THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUALITY”
along with “SEPTEMBER 15” and “1963”
are etched across their silhouettes, reflecting their lasting legacy in the Civil Rights Movement.
Reverse (Back):
The reverse portrays the 16th Street Baptist Church, a central landmark of the Civil Rights era. To the left, the inscription reads:
“KILLED IN THE BOMBING OF THE 16TH ST. BAPTIST CHURCH”
